Distillation Experiments: Corn Wash Edition

Took the mad scientist hat out for a spin today.

I've been tinkering with a sweet feed corn wash, and this batch came out to a little over 7 gallons — grains and all. Once I strained out the grain, I was left with roughly 4–5 gallons of usable wash to play with. That's when the experiments began.

First up: my trusty copper Frankenstill (she's ugly, but she's loyal). I ran the wash through and pulled off two main collections:

  • Jar 1: around the 70–30% hearts range
  • Jar 2: drifting down into the 30–20% territory

Instead of calling it a day, curiosity kicked in (as it does), so I threw both of those jars into the air still, flipped it into reflux mode, and let it go to work. End result? A surprisingly clean 90% spirit. Not quite a true neutral, but definitely smoother and cleaner than I expected from this little Franken-batch.

No idea what this is going to become yet — maybe a base for some future experiments, maybe an infusion playground — but one thing's for sure: it's gonna need to be proofed way down before it's anything close to "sippable."

Always learning, always tweaking, always chasing that next "what happens if…?"

Until next time, shine on.
