When you rent a bare-metal blade in a German data center on the cheap, you tell yourself a lie:
"How hard could this be?"
Spoiler: hard enough that I failed the Proxmox install four or five times, considered just yeeting the whole project, and then ended up hand-rolling my own Proxmox on top of Debian 12 like some kind of Linux cryptid.
This is the story so far.
1. Renting Someone Else's Iron
The hardware isn't mine. I'm renting a blade from a data center in Germany for a ridiculously good price. Specs are beefy enough to feel like a mini-data center: lots of RAM, lots of cores, enough disk to get into trouble.
Why Germany?
- Good bandwidth
- Good privacy laws
- Good price
- And, frankly, I like the idea that my little corner of the internet lives in a rack somewhere across the ocean humming away in the dark.
The catch: it's not some cozy little VPS. I got handed bare metal with iLO4 access and a "good luck, have fun."
So began my friendship with HP's iLO4.
2. Learning to Speak iLO4
Before this, "remote management" for me was basically:
- SSH into a VPS
- Try not to break it
Now I had:
- iLO4 web console
- Virtual media
- Remote KVM
- Fans that sound like a jet taking off when you do something stupid
Step one was just figuring out the dance:
- Log into iLO4 (over a slightly laggy, transatlantic connection).
- Find the virtual media section.
- Mount an ISO like some sort of ritual offering.
- Pray the remote console doesn't decide to lag right when the installer asks for something important.
The first win: seeing the Proxmox installer boot over iLO like, "Yes hello, it is I, your hypervisor of destiny."
The first loss: everything after that.
3. The Proxmox ISO Saga (aka: How Many Times Can You Fail an Install?)
My original plan was pure, simple, and wrong:
- Upload the Proxmox ISO
- Boot from it
- Install
- Done
Reality:
- I'd start the install.
- It would run… for a while.
- Something would fail or hang.
- Rinse, repeat.
- Repeat again.
- Verify checksums.
- Repeat again.
I checked:
- ISO checksum? ✓
- Virtual media configuration? ✓
- iLO4 settings? ✓
- My sanity? ✗
The actual problem wasn't the ISO itself, it was the fact that this environment was not loving a heavy, remote, ISO-driven Proxmox install over a net connection. Between bandwidth, latency, virtual disk changes, and the "I'm not physically in front of this hardware" factor, it was just too fragile.
After failing the install four or five times, I hit that point where you look at the screen and think:
"Okay, maybe you win this round, but I am definitely coming back with a different plan."
Time to pivot.
4. Plan B: Debian 12 + Hand-Rolled Proxmox
If the all-in-one Proxmox installer didn't want to cooperate, fine. I'd go old school.
New plan:
- Install Debian 12 (net install) – minimal, clean, stable.
- Add Proxmox repositories by hand.
- Install the Proxmox packages on top of that.
- Wire it all together like some kind of Franken-hypervisor.
The Debian net installer behaved like a champ:
- Tiny image
- Minimal footprint
- Simple partitioning
- Got the network online and SSH access up
Once Debian was in place, it was a lot of:
- Editing sources.list
- Adding the Proxmox repo
- Importing keys
- Installing the Proxmox virtualization environment
- Manually checking services and making sure I didn't break the base system in the process
It felt surprisingly good, honestly. Instead of:
"Click next until something explodes,"
it was:
"I know what's installed, I know what's running, I know what I changed."
Eventually, the Proxmox web UI came up.
I saw that login screen and just sat there like, "We did it. We built a hypervisor from vibes."
5. Networking: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Bridges
Of course, getting the Proxmox UI to show up is not the same as having a working setup.
This is where the networking boss fight started.
Constraints:
- It's a blade in a remote data center
- I'm working with a limited number of public IPs (not infinite)
- I need to support:
- The Proxmox host
- Containers/VMs
- Future game servers
- Web stuff
- Whatever else I dream up at 2 AM
So I had to:
- Configure Linux bridges for Proxmox
- Decide what gets a public IP vs what lives behind NAT
- Make sure I don't accidentally cut off my own access to the host (always a fun game of "apply network changes and hope you're still in")
There were a few "oh no" moments:
- Applying a config and watching SSH freeze
- Containers not getting DNS
- IPs not routing the way I expected
- Firewall rules behaving like a bouncer with a personal grudge
Each time, it was back into:
- iLO4 console to recover
- Rolling back configs
- Tweaking bridge and interface settings
- Rebooting and confirming everything came back up clean
Eventually I got to:
- Host reachable
- Proxmox UI reachable
- Basic containers online
- DNS behaving
Not elegant yet, but functional. And in homelab land, "functional" is step zero.
6. Containers: From "Hello World" to "Why Won't You Start?"
Once Proxmox was happy-ish, I started playing with containers.
That part went something like:
- Pull template
- Create container
- Click start
- Watch it fail for some reason that is absolutely my fault
Most of the early issues came from:
- Storage config not quite right
- Network bridge assignments being wrong or missing
- DNS not resolving inside the containers
- Permissions/privileged vs unprivileged settings catching me off guard
So I iterated:
- Fix storage defaults
- Standardize which bridge each container uses
- Set up consistent DNS
- Decide which things get their own address vs reverse proxying later
It was a bit like trying to teach a bunch of gremlins which hallway they're allowed to use.
But slowly:
- Containers spun up reliably
- Networking stopped being chaos
- I had a base pattern I could reuse
At that point, the blade stopped feeling like "a rented stranger in Germany" and started feeling more like my platform.
7. The Bigger Picture: What This Blade Is Actually For
So why go through all this?
Because this blade isn't just a random toy box. It's the foundation layer for a bigger, long-term project under the Spurlin.me umbrella.
Without getting into anything sensitive or overly detailed, the high-level vision looks something like:
- Centralized hosting for my stuff
- Websites, blogs, and personal projects
- WordPress-type setups
- Some experimental apps
- Backend for creative and technical projects
- Game servers and prototypes
- Maybe some CTF/infosec infrastructure
- Sandboxes for weird ideas that shouldn't live on shared hosting
- A place to consolidate the "Reps4Thor" ecosystem
- Logs, write-ups, and war stories
- Experimentation with automation, monitoring, and backups
- A living lab that can grow with the rest of the Spurlin.me universe
In short: this blade is step one of a master plan to stop scattering my projects across random VPSs and start building something coherent, powerful, and properly mine… even if the physical metal is rented.
8. Lessons Learned (So Far)
A few takeaways from this first chapter:
- Bare metal is honest.
When something breaks, you feel it directly. No cloud magic, no invisible abstractions. Just you, Linux, and whether you configured the bridge correctly. - Sometimes the all-in-one installer is not your friend.
The Proxmox ISO is great on hardware you control directly. Over a remote, slightly finicky virtual media link? Debian net install + manual Proxmox is way more predictable. - iLO4 is your lifeline. Treat it with respect.
When you brick your network config and lose SSH, iLO4 is the only reason this doesn't become a support ticket and a shame story. - Document as you go.
Every command, every file you tweak, every weird corner case you hit—future you will absolutely forget how you fixed it the first time. - "I don't own the hardware" doesn't mean "I don't own the stack."
Renting from a data center is fine. The architecture, topology, and services built on top? That's where the identity lives.
9. Where I'm Headed Next
The journey is nowhere close to "done." Next steps look like:
- Hardening the host and Proxmox environment
- Standardizing container/VM patterns
- Building out my core services (web stack, dev tools, logging, etc.)
- Slowly migrating workloads into this new home base
- Turning the whole thing into a story worth reading and a stack worth reusing
This blade in Germany started as "just a good deal on some compute." It's turning into the foundation of the Reps4Thor lab and the broader Spurlin.me ecosystem.
Plenty more to break. Plenty more to build.
And now at least, when something goes sideways at 3 AM, I know exactly which bridge config to blame.
